Kenyan conservationist Leonard Akwany receives his 2023 Whitley Award for his work empowering communities and bolstering grassroots fisheries management at Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest freshwater lake, helping native fish species recover.
Filmed at the Royal Geographical Society, London, as part of the Whitley Awards' 30th Anniversary ceremony livestream, Leonard reflects on his career path from fisherman to conservationist, and on his dream to restore the biodiversity of Lake Victoria for future generations.
